Foster
Parrots, Ltd.
Volunteer at
Foster Parrots Massachusetts

If you
have a few hours each week that you can give to the care of the birds
here at Foster Parrots, please consider visiting us for an introductory
visit. You will find that there are many birds here that will benefit
from your added attention and care. Whether you intend to adopt or just
want to help out you will make a difference both in the life of the
birds and in the lives of those of us who are here fighting for the
improved care of all parrots in captivity. Every hour you can donate to
the cause will allow us to further the many goals and efforts in
conservation and avian welfare.

If you wish to volunteer,
all we ask is that you do so with regularity and for as long a period as
possible. We ask that you make the commitment to show up on your chosen
day for a period of at least three months. You will be trained to care
for all of the birds here and you will learn much about the complex
minds and personalities of these amazing creatures.
New Volunteer
Requirements:
-
You must be 18 years or
older to volunteer at the sanctuary.
-
We are always in need of
volunteers, people who can commit to one or more
regularly-attended mornings each week.
-
Volunteer hours are
between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Monday through Sunday. There are
no afternoon volunteer hours.
-
Volunteer duties include
providing food and water to the birds, cleaning cages and performing
a limited amount of standard sanctuary maintenance like sweeping,
washing floors, emptying trash, etc.
-
All initial/orientation
visits must be scheduled during the afternoon hours between 1:00 and
3:00 p.m. All days are available except Saturdays, provided you
schedule in advance.
-
Attend your
pre-scheduled orientation visit. During this time we will get to
know each other as you take a tour of the sanctuary.
-
You will be provided
with a New Volunteer Packet, which provides information about
policies and procedures. There are also several forms that you will
need to fill out and bring back with you on your first volunteer
day.
-
Choose at least one
morning during the week that you can commit to on a regular basis.
There may be some days when our volunteer schedule is full. If you
have no schedule flexibility, you will be placed on a waiting list
for your preferred day and called in when space becomes available.
Working with parrots is very
different from working with dogs and cats and more closely akin to
working with dolphins or primates, and they are always full of
surprises. Many of the volunteers we have now have been here for years,
and you will also find many wonderful new friends who share your
compassion and desire to help these birds who, through no fault of their
own, have found themselves in captivity, many of whom were caught in the
wild and brought here from a life of freedom.
If you are interested in
volunteering and making a difference, please feel free to
contact us and schedule your initial
orientation visit.
