Foster Parrots, Ltd.
Staff and Volunteers

Born in Washington state, Director,
Marc Johnson spent his early years in the Detroit area until 1963 when he moved to Alabama where his father worked for NASA during the beginnings of the space program. The exposure to a life in the wilds of Alabama and to the mystery of space flight combined to instill a deep admiration for the wonder of flight.

Marc was educated in Europe where he lived for 12 years from 1968 to 1980. After earning his teaching credentials from the University of London, Marc opened a pottery studio in Battersea, London, where he learned the traditional craft of studio pottery.

Upon his return to the US, Marc spent five years in the Phoenix area and in 1985 moved to the Boston area where he resumed his teaching career at a small art school until 1987 when he opened his studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Karen Lee, Co-Director, earned her B.A. degree in Writing and Publishing from Emerson College in Boston. A New England native, she left the east coast in 1988 to live in San Diego, California. It was there that she acquired her first parrot, a Lilac Crowned Amazon named Rikki, who she found on display at a yard sale. Her relationship with this gentle bird helped forge a deep empathy and lasting connection with parrots that began to influence her life and direction significantly.

After eight years in southern California, Karen returned to the east coast. Soon thereafter she learned about the work being done by Marc Johnson and the Foster Parrots sanctuary. Beginning as a volunteer at the start of 2000, she began to assume responsibility for a great deal of the organization's operations and soon took her place as Co-Director beside Marc Johnson. The two have been the driving force behind the efforts of Foster Parrots ever since.
