Foster Parrots, Ltd.
Adoption Overview

Although we do receive very tame birds from time-to-time, it is still the exception to the rule. More than 90% of the birds we take in are abused, neglected and frightened of life. All birds, including the tame ones, will take an exceptionally patient and seriously devoted caregiver who will take the time necessary to give them the trust they need to live a life without fear.

Written Resources

The Adoption Requirements dictate that any adoptive home must be well educated. As a first step we recommend that the new bird caretaker buy several issues of a good parrot magazine and a book or two on parrots to learn as much as possible about the dietary and emotional needs of captive parrots. Make sure the books were recently written because many outdated editions are still on the market.

Intent

The prospective adopter must remember that in most cases these birds will need care far beyond that of the hand fed babies in the pet shops. These birds will need to regain their trust of humans and to overcome the years of neglect that they have suffered. This takes time and patience.

The responsibility to these birds is one we take very, very seriously. We are picky about who is eligible and everyone must truthfully fill out an Adoption Application. If a bird that has been adopted out is later killed by the adopter's dog or cat, we will have failed in our endeavor to improve the lives of birds who have already suffered enough. Please, if your intention is to become a breeder or your interest is getting an inexpensive bird, remember that it is our intention to find only the best of homes for every bird here.

The Ideal Parrot Home

Who would best adoption candidate?

  • It is our believe that someone who already owns a hand-tame companion bird and who has the space, time and patience would be ideal.

  • We also prefer homes with fewer than 4 birds because we believe that each new bird added to a home takes away some of the time that each would have spent with their guardians.

  • We do not adopt birds to children, and we are cautious about adopting to anyone without stable home and employment situation.

  • Unlike a cat or dog adoption, many of these birds will live from 30 - 100 years, and our goal is end the passing of these sensitive, intelligent creatures from home to the next.

They deserve better. They deserve the consistency and security that a stable home life can offer.

If you would be a suitable bird owner, please fill out an Adoption Application and mail it to Foster Parrots or contact us via phone or email.
